Summer Modesty Series: part 1 swimwear

 Thursday, May 28, 2009

This is my first post in the that I will be doing here on my blog.

The pools are open and school is out, what better way to spend and afternoon than poolside? Before you head out the door with your beach bag and towel under your arm, look in the mirror. Is what you are wearing modest and pleasing to the Lord or have you let down your standards and purchased a swimsuit that would hardly pass as being modest? As young women, it is easy to see how "everyone else" attires themselves when going swimming and rationalize that "If they're wearing that, so can I". Don't do it. Don't compromise. What we wear when swimming can have either a positive or a negative impact on those around us. If for no other reason than this, dress modestly for the sake of guys. Girls, we should never dress in a way that would cause our brothers in Christ, or other men in general, to stumble. I am not saying that you have to wear a swim dress like ladies in 1909 would have worn, but I am urging you to dress in swim attire that is decent and doesn't expose you. Below are a few pointers that may be helpful in selecting swimwear/swimsuits.

1. Be absolutely certain that the swimsuit won't become translucent when wet! Make sure that the suit is lined and isn't clingy.

2. Watch the neckline! If it's too low-don't buy it!

3. I suggest you wear swim shorts if your going to be wearing a one piece swimsuit. One piece suits are often cut high in the leg and don't leave much to the imagination.

4.If you wear a modest tankini, be sure that the top is long enough and won't reveal anything when you bend over.

Note: I know the subject of swimwear is somewhat difficult to address in appropriate terms but please consider everything before you buy or wear a swimsuit. I believe that dressing in appropriate swim attire is essential for all Christian young ladies. Dress in a manner that pleases God and won't bring shame to his name.

I suggest you visit the Rebelution and view the Modesty Survey which has excellent resources on dressing modestly for every occasion.

Thanks for this! It can be such a challenge to buy modest swimwear! I have started to just wear a t-shirt and shorts. Thanks for the pointers :)

Fiona Black hasn't started selling Cd's yet, so that's why you couldn't find anything on Google. I can send you one of her Cd's if you paid for the shipping though. She gave me 2-3 Cd's so I would be happy to send you one. I can always get more from her if I needed them. Let me know...it's no trouble at all, believe me!

Interesting subject - and it is really not easy to find appropriate swim wear, as most women like to show their bodies. It is the same with summer dresses. I'm glad that meanwhile I have got a decent collection of modest dresses to choose from, but it took me several years!

Hey, thanks for commenting on my blog. I DID decide to come along over and visit yours... Which by the way, I like it. =D Great post. I agree with the caution of swimsuits. Even if most people think it IS modest, I still make sure nothing's showing. :)

Keep up the work!
God bless,
~Bookie

Awesome post!!! It's hard to find modest swimwear these days, but if you add something like a t-shirt, it's totally doable. I find myself doing that a lot.

Great pointers!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Be sure that I'll be coming here more often!!!

God Bless ya!

Very good post! Especially the not wanting to stumble our brothers part. Having had modesty and purity woven throughout my life, I find it hard to imagine that girls these days actually wear things to stumble guys on purpose, and yet they do. We NEED to be different. Not just for us, but like you said, for everyone else!

Great blog! Yes Etsy is a great site to sell/buy things handmade, I really love it.

Great post! I always struggle to find modest swimsuits because they're not exactly popular, in fact they seem so rare, but it's well worth the struggle. I don't care about modern fashion. Knowing that God approves overcomes the fear of not having other's approval!

I've always worn shorts w/ my bathingsuits just because I've always felt more comfortable that way. Especially since I'm sort of long wasted! Until last year! I found the greatest suit at TJ Maxx! It was a tankini that came w/ little shorts and it was a really high cut neck! Anyway, I really appreciate these last few posts! Keep it up!
God bless,
Caro

My mom makes our swim suits and I love them (though people think that is a swim suite cover up). It is like a loose fitting jump suite.

Hi Elizabeth,
That was a great post, I'm about to read part 2 also.
I just told my mom not long ago that I wanted swim shorts or something, cause I have a swim shirt, but it just feels kinda weird with no bottoms to wear, so I think I'm getting some soon!
Thanks for stopping by my blog too!

It took me a really long time to find a swimsuit. I eventually choose one off of a Modest Swimwear website. It was a little expensive (shipping & all), but it was totally worth it!
